Monofloral Honey
Manuka Honey is a monofloral honey – it is from the nectar of one very special plant species grown only in New Zealand called Leptospermum scoparium, also locally known as Manuka tree. The bioactvity of Manuka Honey known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is closely associated with a range of therapeutic properties.
Research shows Manuka Honey with an activity factor of 10 or more has powerful medicinal properties. It has natural an microbial and an bacterial substance that helps in healing of infections, burns etc. It also stimulates and strengthens your immune system aiding in cell metabolism and tissue repair making it your skin’s natural best friend. Apart from it’s medicinal property, Manuka Honey is great simply on toast for breakfast, or as part of a more elaborate gourmet meal or drink.
Our UMF20+ is of the highest grade of antibacterial honey, available in very limited quantities. UMF20+ certifies the antibacterial level found in the honey and tested in the laboratories located around NZ.
What does UMF Stand For?
“Unique Manuka Factor” – this is the name given to the form of an bacterial activity found in some Manuka Honey which was discovered by Dr. Peter Molan (MBE) at Waikato University’s Honey research unit. Most honey has some activity in part due to the formation of hydrogen peroxide. UMF activity is due to other natural phytochemicals present in the honey.
How is the UMF activity tested?
The hydrogen peroxide activity of the honey is neutralized with the addition of enzyme catalyst. The antimicrobial activity of the honey against staphylococcus aureus is then tested and compared to a known antiseptic agent – phenol. The test protocol was developed by Dr. Peter Molan.
What does the Number mean?
The number after the letters UMF represents the level of antibacterial activity of the honey against staphylococcus aureus as a percentage phenol concentration i.e., East Cape UMF15+ Active Manuka Honey has been certified to have an antibacterial effect better than a 15% phenol solution.
Why is UMF Active Manuka Honey preferred to other Manuka Honey?
UMF is the only Manuka Honey which has been tested and certified to have a specific level of antibacterial activity. UMF Manuka Honey is more effective against some bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, a common cause of infected wounds and streptococcus pyogenes which cause sore throats. UMF activity is very stable and is not adversely affected by heat and light during storage where hydrogen peroxide activity can be. UMF activity is not adversely affected by the catalase enzyme that is present in the tissues and serum of the body.
What is UMF Active Manuka Honey used for?
Many medical professions around the world are having good results with the treatments of wounds and skin ulcers, many of which have not responded to other standard treatments. Research has shown it to be beneficial for pain associated with stomach ulcers and also to help with shortening the duration of and rehydration of patients with bacteria diarrhoea. It has also been shown to be beneficial for Oral Hygiene and as an energy food to enhance the body’s stamina.
